Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. Known for its attractive purple color, which ranges from lavender to dark purple. The primary hue of amethyst ranges from lavender or lilac to dark purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or two secondary hues, red and blue. High-quality amethyst is produced in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Far East.    

 

 

Amethyst is a three-dimensional tetrahedral network with a silicon atom in the center and four oxygen atoms around the vertices of the tetrahedrons. This structure is very hard, giving quartz its hardness and weather resistance. The mineral has the same hardness as quartz, making it suitable for use in jewelry.
